TOWARD MAGNETIC RESONANCE ONLY TREATMENT PLANNING: DISTORTIONMITIGATION AND IMAGE-GUIDED RADIATION THERAPY VALIDATIONbyRYAN GLEN PRICEAugust 2016Advisor: Dr. Carri K. Glide-Hurst Major: Medical PhysicsDegree: Doctor of PhilosophyWhile MR-only treatment planning has shown promise, there are still severalwell-known challenges that are currently limiting widespread clinical implementation.Firstly, MR images are affected by both patient-induced and system-level geometricdistortions that can significantly degrade treatment planning accuracy. . In addition, the availability of comprehensive distortion analysis software is currently limited. Also whilemany groups have been working toward a synthetic CT solution, further study is neededon the implementation of synCTs as the reference datasets for linac-based image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) to help determine their robustness in an MR-onlyworkflow.A 36×43×2 cm phantom with 255 known landmarks (~1 mm) was scanned using 1.0T high-field open MR-SIM at isocenter in the transverse, sagittal, and coronalaxes, and a 465x350x168mm 3D phantom was scanned by stepping in the superior-inferior direction in 3 overlapping positions to achieve a total 465x350x400mm sampledFOV yielding >13,800 landmarks(3D Gradient-Echo, TE/TR/α = 5.54 ms/30 ms/28°,voxel size =1×1×2mm). A binary template (reference) was generated from a phantom

Geometric distortion evaluation of magnetic resonance images by a new large field of view phantom for magnetic resonance based radiotherapy purposes
Background: The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based radiotherapy planning method have been considered in recent years because of the advantages of MRI and the problems of planning with two images modality. The first step in MRI-based radiotherapy is to evaluate magnetic resonance (MR) images geometric distortion. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate system related geometric distort...

Introduction: In recent years, the use of magnetic resonance (MR) images in radiation treatment planning has drawn considerable attention. However, although the extent of a tumor can be determined in great detail on MR images, the geometric accuracy of these images is limited by distortions stemming from the inhomogeneity of the static background magnetic field, the nonlineari...

Introduction: Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging has emerged as a valuable tool in radiation treatment (RT) planning as well as Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging owing to its superior soft-tissue contrast. Due to the fact that there is no direct transformation from voxel intensity in MR images into electron density, itchr('39')s crucial to generate a pseudo-CT (Computed Tomography) image ...

Introduction: Nowadays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in combination with computed-tomography (CT) is increasingly being used in radiation therapy planning. MR and CT images are applied to determine the target volume and calculate dose distribution, respectively. Since the use of these two imaging modalities causes registration uncertainty and increases department w...

Introduction: Despite growing interest in the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the external radiotherapy design process (RT), Computer Tomography (CT) remains a gold standard and is regarded as a basic imaging modality in radiotherapy. MRI shows the high contrast in soft tissues without any radiation exposure to patients. As a result, MRI is used in functional tissue ...
